Preparing for Climate Change and Extreme Weather in NYC

In July 2023, Melting Metropolis joined reporters at THE CITY who held an Open Newsroom event at Queens Public Library. The event was an opportunity to discuss the effects of climate change in the city and what New Yorkers can do about them.

Our New York lead researcher, Dr Kara Schlichting, moderated a panel of experts including a journalist from The City newspaper and representatives from the Eastern Queens Alliance and WE ACT for Environmental Justice.

They discussed the effects of climate change and extreme weather in New York City, and responded to local community concerns and questions covering a wide range of topics, from heat waves to flooding.
